Annular rescue parachute: Smart

New lightweight production possibilities were reason for us to proceed in developing good rescue technology and make it even better.

Advanced material provided the basis for weight reduction and smaller packed measure. Compared with Annular Classic we were able to reduce the weight by almost 30% at similar material costs. Smart is designed as PDA (Pull-Down-Apex) annular parachute. This means, that pulling the centre line, enlarges its projected surface and reduces the canopy's volume. Thus sink rate and opening time are reduced.

Developing Smart we focussed on high pendulum stability, which is even more important in rescue systems than low sink rates. High pendulum stability and low sink rate result in smooth landings.

Like all our annular parachutes, Smart comes up with serial deployment accelerators, RAM air pockets*, which achieve fast opening times even at extreme conditions.

*RAM air pockets - serial deployment accelerators
The serial deployment accelerators we developed, so called "RAM air pockets", serially are provided in each of our annular rescue parachutes. RAM air pockets are made of two parabolic pockets, sewed at two opposite panels of the parachute. Those pockets influence the opening even during the first phase, when the parachute unfolds, and even at low speed. These two pockets easily inflate due to their position and low capacity, independent of the flow angle. The resulting air drag at the outside of the canopy makes the parachute basis open fast, so that it can fill up with air.
Thus the opening of the rescue parachute happens much faster, which, in case of an emergency, can be life saving!
